Abstract
In the Eastern Alps, in the south of the western Tauern window, an area of about 18km2 was mapped out in scale 1:10.000. It was studied by geological, petrographical and tectonical methods.
From north to south the following sequence occured:
- Obere Schieferhülle, with a series of green-schists (green-schists and marbles) and a series of calc-mica-schists (phyllites, calcareous phyllites, marbles);
- Matreier Zone (green-schists, quarzites, marbles, phyllites, serpentinites, talc-schists), which can be divided into three parts:
- Zone I is marked by a series of green-schists. In it elements of the Obere Schieferhülle are imbricated.
- Zone II is mainly built up by a deposit of serpentinite which influences its surroundings.
- Some of the rocks within zone III show progressive changes and thus lead up to the rocks of the Austroalpine. Within this zone some parts of Cima-Dura-series are interposed.
- Cima-Dura-series, the lowest part of the higher-Austroalpine (quarzitgneisses, partly garnetbearing mica-schists and paragneisses, augengneisses, amphibole-biotite-schists, thin bands of amphibolites).
The tectonical units are imbricated to each other at their boundaries. Their contact shows no special tectonical discordance.
Imbricated thrusting is the characteristic feature of the Obere Schieferhülle and the Matreier Zone. Imbrication together with isoclinal folding is characteristic in small scale. In the Austroalpine s- and b-emphasized areas are to be distinguished.
Remnants of the tertiary planation surface are preserved. They allow exemplary calculation of the uplift rate for the researcharea which is compared with the recent uplift of the Hohe Tauern as well as with former thickness of overlaying material estimated from the metamorphic degree.
Geomorphological and quarternary phenomena were mapped and examined, too.
Several forms of moraines are evidences of glacial history. The existence of "rockfall at St. Jakob's" is questioned by own results. A rock slide in the Bärental is described.
Muren and slides, the construction of woodland paths and the damages of the flood-desaster in 1987 are pointed out in a special chapter.
